Makers returns to “the Wonderful Everyday”

Ikea Car Park RefurbishmentAfter successful contract completions at Ikea Wembley and Ikea Reading the Ikea team had no hesitation in approaching Makers to resolve some of the issues they were experiencing at their roof top car park at Ikea Nottingham.

After the award-winning success of the Ikea Reading project which received “Liquid project of the year” presented by The Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association in 2023. Makers were called in to address the issues that Ikea were experiencing on their roof top car park created on top of their extension back in 2017.

The roof top car park was part of a £25 million refurbishment scheme which saw 3500m2 extension to the store to create new facilities including a 500-seater restaurant, creche and new display areas. The creation of the extension removed significant parking and given that demand on the site had increased 3-fold from 1 million visitors when it originally opened to 3 million sufficient parking was essential for the Ikea experience for visiting customers. The solution was to create a roof top car park providing 110 parking spaces.

Ikea Car Park RefurbishmentThe refurbishment had been a complete success with visitors dwell time extending however after the recent wet weather highlighted some deficiencies with some build issues resulting in water penetration in showroom areas.

After a quick series of meetings Makers were engaged to overhaul the roof top parking which had been identified as the source of the leaks. Consisting of an existing asphalt waterproofing system, large cracks had begun to form allowing water into the concrete structure.

The repair will consist of preparation works to the existing asphalt surface, a series of crack repair treatments and introduction of additional drainage. As the building is occupied directly below the parking level the fully reinforced Triflex ProPark PMMA system has been selected with works taking approximately 6 weeks. The roof top car park will remain closed during the works and is due for completion shortly after Easter.

“Ikea have been a great Client to work for and we continue to service their needs along with our key partners… .although the car park is relatively new it is flexible and so we have lent on previous experience to design out such issues….”

Darren Wootton Makers Technical Director

The store will remain open for the duration of the works and will come with a 10 year material and waterproofing guarantee.
