IKEA Reading Car Park Refurbishment

Ikea Reading Steel Frame Multi-storey Car Park RefurbishmentIn 2016 Ikea constructed its superstore and multi-storey car park at Reading. The car park consisted of 4 floors using a steel frame, precast plank and structural topping configuration providing 1000 parking spaces for visiting customers.

At the time of initial build, Ikea selected a Sika Pronto 32 fully reinforced system to cover and protect the external top deck. Thermal expansion provision was provided above the beam lines in the form of induced sealant joints and the deck 9600m2 was divided into colour co-ordinated parking bays and drive isles.

Following a routine maintenance inspection some two years after the initial build the car park surfacing was showing some initial small blisters in isolated areas. The ring-shaped pattern was not immediately obvious but signs of “outgassing” seemed to proliferate to other areas with some parts of the system becoming de-bonded mainly in the main drive isles due to cyclical traffic movements.
